Daisy Pardo, who identified herself as an HEB resident and parent of a child at Hurst Hills Elementary, said she observed crews removing three mature, healthy trees at the front of the school during a rebuilding project and raised concerns about potential removal of trees that she described as “more than a hundred years old.” Pardo also said students had been redirected around the site and that there was no crossing guard at the temporary route, posing a safety concern.
Pardo said she had contacted the principal and was directed to Kelly Doyle, the district construction development manager, and invited staff to discuss specifics after the meeting. “Trees are sentient beings … they keep us healthy and protect us, so the protection for ourselves starts with protecting them,” Pardo told trustees in public comment.
Josh Minor, the district construction manager, responded later in the meeting when the board took other construction items and told trustees the administration would provide monthly updates on project status through the Friday update and post quarterly materials for the public; he also said more detailed project communications intended for trustees and the public are being prepared. Minor noted the district would follow up on specific safety and crossing concerns with site staff.
No board action was taken during the meeting; the resident’s concerns were recorded and staff committed to follow-up and improved reporting to trustees and the public.
