Board reviews 3000‑series policy edits, schedules several policies for May adoption and flags volunteer/background checks

The superintendent and staff noted specific policies that will be brought to the May meeting for board adoption: policies numbered 3007, 3008, 3013, 3015 and 3016 (related to claims audits, gifts/grants, tobacco use, event scheduling and emergency closings). Staff explained formatting cleanups and said some policy language would be augmented to include cross-references by policy number to help navigation.

Board members discussed emergency‑closing procedures for extreme cold and asked that the policy reference the student‑handbook procedure where the district posts more detailed closing criteria. Trustees also asked that tobacco‑use language be clarified so it applies to school property and school‑sponsored events even when those events are held at community facilities; staff said they would consult legal counsel for precise wording.

Trustees raised a question about volunteer screening. The current policy language notes background checks; board members asked staff to clarify which volunteers must be fingerprinted or background screened and whether chaperones for off‑campus activities are included; staff said they would follow up with HR and return with a written procedure.

Administrators listed five policy drafts for action at the May meeting and asked board members to submit comments before final adoption. No final votes on the 3000‑series policies occurred at this meeting.
