The Budget & Finance committee voted April 28 to forward an authorization to accept and expend a $17,500 firefighter safety equipment grant for the FY2025 turnout gear program (Round 2).
Acting Fire Chief Delaney told the committee the grant will purchase five sets of structural firefighting turnout gear that are PFAS‑free. Staff said PFAS—polyfluoroalkyl substances—are used to impart water- and oil-repellant properties to some gear but that exposure has been linked to increased cancer risk; the new gear is PFAS‑free. The chief said turnout gear older than 10 years should be retired, and the grant will replace gear worn beyond that lifespan.
The committee voted by voice to forward the authorization with a favorable recommendation to the full council.
