Council authorizes West Maple resurfacing agreement with ODOT; state to fund 90%

North Canton City Council on April 28 voted to authorize the mayor to enter into a federal-local project agreement (LPA) with the Ohio Department of Transportation for resurfacing West Maple Street from Main Street to Lending Lane.
City staff described the LPA as a standard ODOT arrangement in which ODOT funds 90 percent of the resurfacing cost and pays the contractor directly. "So it's just, ODOT accepting 90% of the cost, and, they pay the contractor directly," a city staff member said during the meeting.
Why it matters: the resurfacing project will rebuild a segment of West Maple Street; using ODOT funding reduces the city's direct capital outlay for the work and shifts contractor administration to the state for the funded share.
Council process and outcome Council introduced and adopted the ordinance authorizing the LPA (read as Ordinance 32-25) and approved it under suspension as an emergency, allowing the mayor to execute the agreement promptly.
Next steps Administration will finalize the LPA with ODOT and proceed with project scheduling and contractor coordination. Staff said ODOT pays the contractor directly for its portion of the project costs.
