Cody Wardlaw gym renovation on track for summer completion; transformer work may extend schedule

DEL RIO — The district—s facilities team reported progress this week on the Cody Wardlaw gym renovation and related construction, but warned a required transformer replacement and temporary power feed will add several weeks to final completion.
Hector Chapa, director of facilities and construction, told trustees on April 28 that ceramic tile and wall installation in three restrooms was nearly complete and plumbing fixtures were scheduled for installation in early May. He said upper-level window framing had been placed and glass was due to be picked up from San Antonio, interior ceiling painting and lighting work were done, and lobby finishing work and VCT flooring remained.
Chapa said the district is estimating overall project completion in July but is "patting that date a little bit" because the electrical work will require de-energizing the existing transformer and installing a new one. To avoid extensive excavation, crews will install a temporary pole and feed to keep power on during work; Chapa said that transformer process will take about six weeks and is expected to start in early June.
On budget, Chapa said there remains approximately $180,000 in contingency for the project. He said pending additional fire-safety items and other items appearing later on the agenda are already accounted for, and that tariffs and recent material price changes have not created current budget shortfalls because much of the scope has already been procured.
Chapa also provided department metrics for maintenance, technology and transportation work orders over the previous 90 days: maintenance created 988 work orders with 92% completed; technology created 3,353 with 89% completed; transportation recorded 360 with 98% completed.
Why it matters: The gym renovation is a high-visibility campus improvement used by students and the community; transformer work is a scheduled electrical requirement that could affect the calendar for finishing non-electrical punch-list items.
What—s next: The contractor expects to finish tile and finish work in early May; the transformer changeover is scheduled for early June and the district plans to keep power via a temporary pole during the work. Staff will return with final completion status and any budget change requests as needed.
