San Felipe-Del Rio CISD updates board on middle school redesign, rezoning and staffing ahead of fall opening

SAN FELIPE DEL RIO, Texas — District staff told the school board on Monday that plans are proceeding for the district—s middle school redesign and the opening of a third middle school in the fall, with rezoning complete, staffing scenarios under review and multiple parent and community outreach events already held.
Sandra Hernandez presented a timeline of milestones dating to September, when the board approved the reconfiguration to three middle schools. She said the district formed a citizens committee, conducted town halls, worked with a demographer on rezoning options, recruited a third middle school principal and expanded some CTE (career and technical education) course planning to align offerings across campuses.
Hernandez said principals and HR were finalizing staffing scenarios in April, operations had begun planning bus routes and the district had begun notifying Garfield staff and special education teachers about assignments. She said work this summer will include notifying paraprofessionals and office staff, finalizing special education placements, completing parent notifications and finishing campus improvements such as the Cody Wardlaw Gym renovations and preparing practice fields for turf replacement.
Monica Luna Garcia, the district—s special education director, told trustees the district continues to work with Region 15 on orientation and mobility services for students with visual impairments. "We do still work with Region 15. It's called orientation and mobility (O&M). And they'll come in and transition any students that are visually impaired to make sure they can transition from all locations," she said.
Board members asked about signage and accommodations for visually impaired or hearing-impaired students and about safety near Garfield School. Hernandez said special education staff will identify required accommodations and that fencing and covers over water channels have been secured between Garfield and nearby properties.
Why it matters: The redesign shifts students and staff across campuses and requires coordination of transportation, special education services, staffing and campus renovations. The district is aiming to open the new configuration in the fall and is scheduling summer transitions for personnel and operations.
