Commission agrees to neighborhood workshop on Tenth Street traffic calming

The City of Stuart commission on April 28 authorized staff to hold a neighborhood workshop to gather input on traffic calming options for Tenth Street and nearby residential corridors.
Why it matters: Tenth Street runs by several schools and residents have asked the city to consider speed reductions, signage changes, physical calming features and other measures to improve pedestrian safety for schoolchildren and neighbors.
Commissioner Clark described multiple written concerns and asked the commission to consider traffic calming between Palm Beach Road and Ocean Boulevard and to find ways to engage residents in solutions. Vice Mayor Collins said the city should identify where the greatest need is and how to pursue cost-effective actions, noting neighborhood requests can shift traffic to adjacent streets.
City Manager Mike Mortel outlined a proposed format: a non-binding open-house workshop, 5–7 p.m., where residents could view boards, mark concerns and provide feedback. Mortel said the police department installed traffic-measuring devices and that Chief Joe Chamanelli provided speed and volume data. Mortel also said staff could compile accident and time-of-day data for commissioners before the workshop.
The commission agreed to proceed with the workshop rather than immediately change speed limits; staff will share existing traffic-count data with commissioners and schedule the public open house. The finance director said potential capital costs could be evaluated as part of the capital improvement program (CIP) review.
What’s next: Staff will schedule and publicize the workshop, provide traffic-count and speed data to commissioners beforehand, and return proposals and cost estimates as part of capital planning.
