Spokane County Public Works says new operations campus ahead of schedule and under budget

Spokane County Public Works staff updated the commissioners on April 29 about construction of a new consolidated operations campus that will bring together bridge crews, fleet operations, inspection and materials labs, sign and signal shops.
Staff said work began the previous spring and that the separate storage building is already complete and seeking temporary occupancy; staff expects the office building and remaining site work to finish in early to mid June, substantially ahead of the original Labor Day target. Construction sequencing and early storage‑building completion helped accelerate the schedule.
Public Works reported reduced contaminated‑soil removal costs and other efficiencies that together are projected to bring the project in about $1 million under budget. Staff said they will stage a move in mid‑June (week of Juneteenth) using summer help to accomplish a quick transition and that commissioners are welcome to tour the nearly finished site before occupancy.
Public Works also described site improvements: security gates on Sharp Avenue, covered parking for equipment, and mitigations for asbestos and water damage in older buildings removed during demolition. Staff said the project duration is now about 15 months rather than the originally planned 18 months.
No board action was requested; staff asked commissioners to coordinate scheduling for a site visit.
