The Scottsdale Tourism Development Commission voted to recommend transferring $430,000 from savings in the Scottsdale Sports Complex capital project to a Monterra improvements project at WestWorld, after a presentation from WestWorld management.
Will Loftall, WestWorld general manager, told the commission Monterra is "a 12,000 square foot multi purpose facility" on the WestWorld campus that has been in use since the early 1990s and "is in excess of 30 years old." He said the bureau of reclamation has already provided $400,000, and the requested $430,000 transfer would bring the project total to about $830,000.
The commission’s recommendation follows a conceptual design effort with DWL Architects. Loftall described a two-phase renovation plan: an interior phase addressing the banquet hall, bar area, conference room, restrooms, roof and air-conditioning, and a second phase focused on outdoor areas including the west patio and entry parking. He said the commission’s intent is a "neutral, timeless, flexible design" and that the facility would support smaller, ancillary events and stand-alone rentals such as holiday parties, corporate meetings, weddings and graduations.
Loftall provided conservative first-year revenue expectations tied to the facility: about 50 booked events, $125,000 in rental income, roughly $640,000 in food-and-beverage sales (with the city receiving 19 percent of those receipts, or about $120,000), and a total initial-year revenue estimate of about $250,000.
After questions from commissioners about the facility’s exclusive caterer and the financing of phase two, the commission moved and seconded a recommendation to fund $430,000; the motion carried with all voting in favor.
The commission did not specify a schedule for construction in the presentation; Loftall said the project is in concept design and will be shaped by final costs and available resources. He also invited commissioners to "come see it."
