Cricket advocates praise planned Mesquite Grove pitch, offer maintenance and programming suggestions

Raghav Savakumar, chairman of the Arizona Cricket Association and chief director of youth programs for USA Cricket, told the Chandler City Council on March 27 that a proposed cricket pitch at Mesquite Grove Park will support community diversity and could host regional tournaments year-round because of Arizona’s climate.
“Cricket is more than a game … it’s connecting cultures, generations,” Savakumar said, describing cricket’s large global following and saying Arizona could host teams from other states during winter months.
Savakumar urged the city to plan for long-term turf maintenance, a rotational schedule that protects the main match surface, and dedicated practice nets so the primary pitch is preserved for games. He offered volunteer support from local cricket groups and asked city staff to consult with cricket-pitch maintenance experts.
Councilmember Orlando thanked Savakumar and asked him to submit written suggestions to city staff (John Cefran was named as the staff contact) so the city’s parks team could incorporate them as planning proceeds. A city staff member told the speaker that detailed maintenance and scheduling conversations are “years away” and would be addressed after initial construction planning.
No action vote was taken on March 27; the comments were delivered at the public comment period for agenda item 8, the Mesquite Grove Park cricket pitch planning.
