The Casa Grande City Council on a unanimous vote approved Resolution 5751 to authorize a memorandum of understanding between the city and the Casa Grande Elementary School District that will allow the city’s youth basketball and volleyball programs to use school gymnasiums for practices.
Danny, a Community Services Department staff member, told the council the district has offered access to gymnasiums at McCartney Ranch, Palo Verde, Desert Willow and Casa Grande Middle School. He said practices would be scheduled Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and that the arrangement would expand practice space and time for participants.
The staff presentation noted participation increases in city-run programs: volleyball enrollment rose from 139 participants in 2023 to a number Danny described as about 56 percent higher this season, and basketball participation grew from 318 in 2023 to 376 this year. The city said greater demand and limited court space at Lencola and the Recreation Center motivated the agreement.
Councilmembers praised the agreement as a way to add indoor capacity while the city continues longer-term planning for outdoor fields and lighting. No conditions or amendments to the memorandum were introduced during the meeting.
Mayor Fitzgibbons moved to approve Resolution 5751. The motion passed on a roll-call vote with Councilmembers Romo, Dugan, Bedellin, Edwards, Huddleston, Mayor Pro Tem Herrmann and Mayor Fitzgibbons voting yes.
The memorandum of understanding allows the city to begin using school gym space once the agreement is executed; staff said they could start scheduling practices as early as the coming Monday.
