Casa Grande council approves resolution to apply for Proposition 202 funds from Gila River Indian Community

Casa Grande’s City Council on March 17 approved a resolution authorizing the city to submit grant applications to the Gila River Indian Community under Proposition 202 and to accept, execute and disperse any awarded funds.
City staff told the council the Gila River Indian Community has shared $1,662,332 with Casa Grande since 2018. Of that total, $1,226,405 has gone directly to the city and $435,927 was allocated for local nonprofit organizations, staff said. The resolution authorizes the city manager to accept grant agreements, the finance director to disperse funds, and allows budget transfers tied to awards.
Mary, a city staff presenter, explained the program’s mechanics and asked for council authorization to submit applications by the end of the month. Council members then moved and seconded the resolution reading; Gloria read the resolution number to the record. The council approved Resolution No. 5759 in a roll-call vote, with council members recorded as voting yes: Grama, Bedellin, Edwards, Huddleston, Romo, Dugan, Mayor Pro Tem Herrmann, and Mayor Fitzgibbons.
The resolution references Proposition 202 revenue sharing and the state Commerce and Economic Development Commission Local Community Fund as the mechanism by which some tribe-shared revenue is made available for local distribution. The city attorney and finance director will be authorized to execute contracts and effect budget transfers only if individual grants are awarded, the staff presentation said.
Council members did not request additional changes to the resolution during the meeting. The item will proceed under the authority granted in Resolution No. 5759 if and when grant awards are received.
