Volunteer group invites community to June 8 dedication honoring Marine Navajo Code Talkers

Tom Kirschner, a volunteer board member of the Havasu Freedom Foundation, urged the Lake Havasu City Council on May 28 to publicize a June 8 dedication for a new section of the Havasu Memorial Walkway in English Village honoring World War II Marine Navajo Code Talkers.
Kirschner said the ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. and include the unveiling of special commemorative bricks honoring the original 29 Code Talkers and others from the roughly 400 who served. He said only nine of the roughly 400 original Marine Navajo Code Talkers were still living.
The foundation is coordinating the event with the Lake Havasu Convention and Visitors Bureau, the local Marine Corps League, the London Bridge Rotary Club and Arizona State University history department representatives; Kirschner said two daughters of original Code Talkers, one an ASU professor, will be guest speakers and that lodging and travel for guests are being provided.
Kirschner asked council members and the public to attend and thanked Mayor Cal Sheehy and the community for support. "This event will be an historic day in Lake Havasu City and we encourage all of you to attend," he said.
