The Lake Havasu City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a lease agreement with Mohave County that will allow the municipal court to remain in its current College Drive facility and to adopt an amendment to the intergovernmental agreement for consolidated administration of the lower courts.
Judge Kalali and Judge Klawley addressed the council on companion items. The lease authorizes continued use of the building while the parties prepare for a planned deconsolidation of the courts, scheduled to take effect on Aug. 30, according to statements at the meeting. Council members were told the change is intended to let municipal and justice courts plan separately, including for space and staffing, as Lake Havasu City’s caseload grows.
Judge Klawley described the amendment as a technical change to deconsolidate administrative responsibility in place while the courts remain co‑located. Council members said the arrangement preserves operations in the near term and provides a path for future courthouse planning.
Councilmember Dolan moved to adopt the lease with Mohave County and Councilmember Groot seconded; the motion passed 7‑0. The council then voted 7‑0 to adopt the intergovernmental agreement amendment for the consolidated administration and operation of the lower courts.
