Council introduces ordinance to align primary date with state law and reappoints Parks board member

At its Aug. 27 meeting the Lake Havasu City Council introduced an ordinance to amend city code section 2.12.090 to reflect a new primary election date established by the state and reappointed a Parks and Recreation Advisory Board member.
City Clerk Ms. Williams told the council that Senate Bill 1154 moved Arizona’s primary election to the first Tuesday in August (Aug. 4, 2020) and changed the candidate nomination period. Staff recommended introduction of the ordinance to align the city’s election scheduling with the new law. The ordinance was introduced without debate; the motion to introduce carried 7–0.
Separately, the council held a public hearing and reappointed Scott Welty to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for a term ending June 30, 2022. Welty told the council he has served on the board for six years and “has enjoyed my involvement with the projects that we've had.” Councilmember Jim Dolan moved to adopt the resolution reappointing Welty; Jenny Coke seconded and the motion passed 7–0.
Why it matters: Adopting the ordinance later in the formal process will change the city’s election calendar and nomination window to match state law; the Parks and Recreation appointment fills an expired term through mid‑2022.
