Akron to accept Johns Hopkins grant tied to Bloomberg Sustainable Cities award, funds innovation positions

The Public Service Committee approved an ordinance to accept and expend roughly $120,000 from Johns Hopkins University to support programs and initiatives associated with Akron’s Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities designation.
Esther Thomas said the award will fund up to three positions over the next couple of years to spur innovation addressing climate change and economic empowerment, and the city is partnering with community groups including Akron Urban League and community action organizations to develop projects. “...this legislation is to, accept an award of about a hundred of a hundred $20,000 to spend on community projects related to climate change and economic empowerment,” she said.
Thomas introduced Jolene Lane from the Bloomberg Sustainable Cities innovation team, who thanked the committee. Committee members placed the ordinance on consent and approved it.
The grant will support staff and community partnerships to design and pilot projects; specific program details and implementation timelines will be developed with community partners.
