Mason County reports steady use of free solid-waste vouchers; recycling facility tour offered

Mason County staff told commissioners the county printed 1,000 solid-waste vouchers and, to date, just over 200 have been redeemed. The county estimates about 30% of the total tonnage available for vouchers has been used.
Staff said community clean-up groups—examples cited included Shelton Youth Connection and local 'trash bash' volunteers—have been contacting the county to request vouchers for organized cleanups. The health department has reportedly exhausted any vouchers it held. County staff said they will continue outreach to groups and ask organizations that do not need their vouchers to return them so others can use them.
If voucher redemptions drive the program past its total tonnage allowance, staff said the county could cover the excess from the county solid-waste fund rather than raising rates. Commissioners asked staff to prepare a budget estimate showing what using the solid-waste fund to cover extra tonnage would cost.
Staff also invited commissioners to a Pioneer recycling facility tour in Tacoma on the 30th; the county will depart at about 9 a.m. and return mid-afternoon. Commissioners discussed travel and schedule conflicts; one commissioner said they could attend.
Ending: Staff will monitor voucher redemptions and return to commissioners if the county is at risk of exceeding the voucher tonnage allocation.
