Ohio EPA and river‑restoration partners updated the Public Service Committee on progress toward removing the Gorge Dam on the Cuyahoga River, saying the project is entering a multi‑season sediment management phase and that mobilization could begin this summer.
Bill (Ohio EPA) provided the update and thanked the city for past support, including the city’s agreement to host sediment management facilities. “The update is, yes, this project is continuing forward. Hopefully in the next few days, there will be a press release. We will be having a public meeting on May 19 to discuss the furtherance of this project and hope, we'll be seeing some activity this summer, and the intent is mobilization will start,” he said.
He described the effort as a phased program: the current sediment management phase is expected to take about two seasons, after which work on the dam structure itself will proceed. When asked about funding, he confirmed there is uncertainty but said the project currently has approval to move forward contingent on securing required matching funds; partners together provide a 35% federal match share, he said.
Committee members thanked project staff and asked about forthcoming public notices; Bill said a press release and public‑meeting details would be issued in the next several days. The committee did not take a formal vote on the update; the presentation served as an informational briefing.
