Akron to bid rehabilitation of Waters Park amphitheater ahead of summer events

The Public Service Committee authorized staff to advertise for bids to rehabilitate the Waters Park amphitheater, a stone WPA‑era structure that has seen little recent maintenance.
Public Service Director Chris Luddle said the amphitheater requires substantial stonework and hand labor to replace missing stones and make the outdoor theater usable for planned bicentennial events and summer plays. “This legislation will allow us to build, to bid the rehab of this project. ... This is all stone work. It is, it's a lot of hand work,” Luddle said, noting the city hopes to reactivate the site for performances and community use.
Council members emphasized the site's community value—one council member noted the amphitheater is in his ward—and the committee approved suspension of the rules to place the item on the evening agenda because of timing related to festivals.
The committee voted to suspend rules and give a favorable report so the rehab could proceed quickly; procurement and construction scheduling will follow the bidding process.
