The Flagstaff City Commission on Diversity Awareness approved routine business and advanced three proclamations and a commissioner nomination during its April 16 meeting.
The commission approved the minutes of its March 19, 2025 meeting by voice vote after corrections to spelling and wording were noted; Commissioner Riesenberg recorded an abstention, the commission noted. “Motion carried by voice vote,” the chair said after the vote.
The commission discussed two draft proclamations for Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month and agreed to add Arab American Heritage Month to the calendar for 2026. Commissioners raised a concern that April’s Arab American Heritage Month had been missed and asked staff to draft language and pursue placement on a near‑term council agenda if feasible. Chair and staff then moved to advance three proclamations — Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month; Jewish American Heritage Month; and an Arab American Heritage Month proclamation to be drafted — to City Council. The motion to forward the proclamations carried by voice vote.
Under item 7B, the commission nominated Commissioner Hernandez to serve as the commission’s representative on the Multicultural County Park exhibition selection panel, with Commissioner Martinez named as alternate. The motion to appoint Hernandez and Martinez passed by voice vote.
Commissioners discussed participation in community events, including Pride and Juneteenth; staff noted a parade entry deadline of June 2 and said staff would reserve a parade slot for the commission if members expressed interest. The meeting adjourned at 3:04 p.m.
