Mesa proclaims citywide 'read 15 minutes a day' goal, library sets 1,000,000‑minute target

"We settled on a goal of reading 15 minutes a day, and we're challenging and encouraging all residents of Mesa to read 15 minutes a day," Jesse Sims, assistant library director, told the council. Sims said the library has set a citywide goal to read 1,000,000 minutes and plans author events and seasonal reading programs.
Sims noted that all reading formats count toward the goal: "It doesn't matter how you read ... audiobooks count, reading to your kids counts, your kid reading to you counts," he said. The mayor and council thanked library staff and posed for a photo with library representatives following the proclamation.
The proclamation was presented as part of a recognition agenda item; staff said the library director Polly (not present) spearheaded the initiative and that the program will include summer and winter reading activities and author events for residents.
