Committee reports Anchor Act to strengthen cyber, communications for academic research fleet

The House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology voted to favorably report HR 1223, the Accelerating Networking Cyber Infrastructure and Hardware for Oceanic Research (ANCHOR) Act, which would direct the National Science Foundation to develop a plan to modernize network, communications, and cyber infrastructure for the U.S. academic research fleet.
“Our research fleet is a cornerstone of scientific advancement,” Representative Fong said while introducing the bill and urging support. He and co-sponsor Representative Stevens said the fleet lacks modern secure networking and communications, leaving sensitive data and scientific operations vulnerable. The markup record notes the U.S. academic research fleet comprises 18 oceanographic vessels and that upgrades would include enhanced networking, video communications, and secure researcher access.
Ranking Member Lofgren and other members supported the bipartisan bill. No amendments were prefiled. Chairman Babin moved that the committee report HR 1223 to the House with a favorable recommendation; the motion carried by voice vote and the bill was ordered favorably reported without objection.
