Board authorizes filling community development director and confirms committee representatives; finance office reports strong online tax-lien auction

Santa Cruz County supervisors on Tuesday authorized county staff to fill the vacant community development director position, approved a slate of county committee representatives, and accepted a finance report showing a marked increase in participation and proceeds from this year’s online tax-lien auction.
The board voted, by voice, to authorize filling the community development director vacancy after staff said the post has been open for roughly four months. The motion passed without recorded roll-call votes.
County staff also presented proposed representatives for several regional bodies. The board approved primary and alternate appointments for the Arizona Border Counties Coalition, the Greater Nogales–Santa Cruz County Port Authority, the Southeastern Arizona Governments Organization (SEAGO), and the Community Protection and Benefits Agreement (CPBA) group that will negotiate local protections related to the South32 project. Supervisors said those seats may rotate over time to allow all members to represent the county on different panels.
In a departmental update, the county treasurer’s office reported that its first online tax-lien auction drew 204 registered bidders and produced $907,933.27 in sales, a substantial increase from roughly $500,000 reported in the prior year’s in-person sale. Department staff said 935 of the roughly 7,000 parcels had bids placed and that the auction ran for two weeks; most collections are complete except for an outstanding $9,000 from one bidder. Staff said bidders praised the online process as more accessible and fair.
Supervisors also approved the consent agenda and adjourned the meeting.
