County reports pavement projects, ditching and August target to reopen Highway 29 bridge

Staff said Garrett Pavement Company will begin the 2025 tail-made project in April with work on Hudson River Church Road and John Downs areas, with completion expected in May. The road department reported ongoing shoulder work, ditch clearing, mowing and right-of-way maintenance on several county roads and railroad maintenance in Carlton. Staff also said land-clearing behind the EMS station continues as equipment is available.
On the Highway 29 bridge, staff said they received an update from Georgia DOT indicating the bridge is expected to be open in August, weather permitting, and that DOT had previously said April but now indicated August. County leaders acknowledged the impact of the 17-mile detour for local travelers and commercial vehicles.
No formal board action was taken; the report was informational and intended to update commissioners and the public on schedules and operations.
