Provisional community college proposes electrician certification, asks county for study session on workforce partnerships

Greg Lucero, speaking for the Santa Cruz County Provisional Community College District, asked the Board of Supervisors on April 15 to direct county staff to arrange a study session to explore partnerships on training programs and facilities.
"I would like to request that the board of supervisors direct their staff to work with me to set up a study session with our provisional community college governing board to begin discussions on how we can partner together to develop training and education programs for the community," Lucero said.
Lucero described a framework agreement with mining company South 32 to develop workforce training projects and said the district's first statement of work would implement an electrician certification program. He described the course as a three-semester pilot slated to start this fall and said it "will include 16 cohorts or 16 students," and that South 32 would offer scholarships to cover cost for selected students. Lucero said the college will develop further certification programs and is seeking a project manager to help plan a longer-term campus and training center.
Deputy County Manager Chris Young, who addressed the board earlier, described his participation on a regional workforce development executive committee of local educators and administrators and said the group will plan postsecondary facilities development and training to meet local employer needs. "The intent of the committee is to develop a clear, long term vision in the corresponding resource strategy necessary for a strong workforce in Santa Cruz County," Young said.
Lucero asked the board to direct staff to coordinate a study session with the provisional college governing board. The board did not take a formal vote on that request during the meeting; staff follow-up was implied by the public invitation and by Lucero's direct request to the board.
