Sheriff’s office to add explosive‑detection canine after $7,500 AKC Reunite donation; deputy to train in North Carolina

Chief Deputy Adcock told the court the sheriff’s office has responded to several bomb threats in recent years and typically relies on out‑of‑county K‑9 units. The locally trained dog, he said, will shorten response time and also be trained for patrol and some crime‑scene evidence work.
“Since that point, the sheriff saw a need” to have a local explosive‑detection dog, Chief Adcock said, describing past incidents at Brownsboro schools and courthouse facilities that disrupted operations.
Commissioners also approved a related travel request to allow Deputy Jared Mills to travel to Highland Canine in Harmony, North Carolina, for handler training and certification with Atticus from May 17 through June 13, 2025. Chief Adcock said the travel is required so the deputy can learn the dog’s capabilities and handling.
The donation and the travel authorization were each moved and seconded (motion records show Commissioner Richardson and Commissioner Tooley among the movers/seconders) and both motions passed unanimously.
Meeting minutes note Atticus is in training in North Carolina at the time of the vote and AKC Reunite is an out‑of‑state donor.
