Parks Department prepares pools, pickleball courts and community events for summer

Parks staff reported storm clean-up, new LED bathhouse lighting, pool and splash-pad opening dates, pickleball court paving and several upcoming community events.
John Messenger, parks maintenance supervisor, told the Board of Public Works and Safety on April 28 that crews completed storm cleanup, removed five trees, planted 10 memorial trees, and installed new LED lighting in bathhouses.
Messenger said water will begin filling pools and splash pads starting May 5 pending state and county water quality approvals; the splash pad will open after approvals and the main pool will open on Memorial Day, May 24. The department completed safety training with Lebanon Utilities on bucket truck and chipper operation and held its last lifeguard certification course for the season.
He reported that asphalt was placed on the Memorial Park pickleball courts and surfacing work was scheduled to follow after a curing period; work also started at Abner Longley Park. The department rescheduled its Easter egg hunt due to weather but reported a strong turnout and thanked local donors, including Purity Wholesale Foods and Central Credit Union, and Lebanon High School students for volunteering. Upcoming community events include a kindergarten Touch-a-Truck on May 2, a Boone County Community Orchestra concert at Memorial Park (weather permitting) and outdoor yoga classes beginning May 3.
Messenger said the parks crew is finishing the Sycamore shelter roof at Hop Pond and continuing ongoing maintenance and seeding projects at Rees Park.
