Fire Chief (last name Beita) reported that the town’s fire district has implemented a burn ban because of dry and windy weather and urged residents to avoid open burning and to be vigilant about common ignition sources such as dragging trailer chains and vehicle catalytic converters.
The chief said the department had been coordinating with local partners including Kit Carson Electric on public awareness and preparedness. He also referenced a safety standard relevant to combustible hazards and commercial cannabis manufacturing, noting NFPA 420 as a source of guidance.
The burn ban covers open burning and campfires without a controlled appliance; the chief encouraged use of propane appliances with on/off controls if residents must cook outdoors. The department plans to reevaluate the ban after forecasted moisture; the chief said limited precipitation could be offset quickly by expected high winds.
Ending: Chief Beita said most residents had been cooperative but urged the community to report burning or smoke by calling emergency or non‑emergency dispatch based on the situation.
