Township staff presented figures during the meeting, saying general appropriations were $40,210,665.71, the reserve for uncollected taxes was $1,653,352.29, and anticipated revenues were $18,930,121.92. A township staff member said the net effect on the average assessed $300,000 home will be about $91 more per year.
The item was the subject of a brief public comment period. Regina Desenzo, a Sunset Drive resident, urged the committee to keep the municipal budget tight because of concerns about the Lacey Township School District's finances. "I hope this was the most merciful budget you can come up with because we know there is disaster waiting for us at the Board of Education," Desenzo said, saying she was told the school board missed an April 15 deadline related to extending a 2% cap and that she expected a large increase at the board level.
Desenzo also said she has contacted the county and the state Commissioner of Education and asked the committee to hold the municipal budget as lean as possible while school-finance uncertainty continues. Committee members took no formal action on the school board during the meeting; the adoption vote recorded approval of the municipal budget by roll call.
The adoption followed a prior vote to allow the budget to be read by title only, a routine step the committee approved earlier in the meeting. Committee members who cast recorded votes during the meeting indicated support for the resolutions to read the budget by title and to adopt the municipal budget.
The budget adoption is the committee's step in setting the township's municipal tax levy for the year; any changes to school taxes would be set by the Lacey Township School District and other taxing authorities.
Looking ahead, members and residents at the meeting urged continued close oversight of school-budget developments and encouraged residents to follow further notices from the school board and county education officials.
