MSD selects simplified design for downtown barn quilt wall; artist commissioned

Parks and Recreation Director Cole Wuerls reported the department is working on a barn quilt installation on the recreation center exterior wall facing Church Street and that the MSD previously approved up to $2,500 to begin the project. Wuerls said the board’s funded square will be the largest (4-by-4); other squares are 2-by-2 feet. He told the board the artist commission so far is approximately $400 and that additional costs will be materials and mounting hardware.
At the meeting the board reviewed staff options for including destination names on the mural’s smaller squares. After discussion, the board voted to adopt Option 2, the simplified layout without added destination names on the smaller squares, with a separate central compass-style focal piece. Board members discussed local name choices for the destinations and made minor name adjustments (transcript references include a change described as “Murphy to Manio” and local names such as Castellia, Red Oak and Bailey). The motion selecting Option 2 with the proposed name adjustments passed.
Wuerls said staff will finish one more 2-by-2 square, mount the initial core of the wall and reach out to MSD businesses to sponsor or purchase additional painted squares; staff anticipated work would be underway before June. The MSD-funded portion will be stored and inventoried for future use if not immediately installed.
