Board refers contested school‑naming policy back to committee after public objections

A number of public speakers urged clarity and fairness in naming decisions; the public comments included concerns that an online poll and other processes had produced results some community members found objectionable. Trustee Mr. Hollingshead offered an amendment that would have preserved community committees in the naming process and allowed naming schools after deceased citizens. Trustee Miss Watley moved to table (later reformulated as a motion to refer) the policy to the committee so the board could consider the original language recommended by staff and allow further vetting.
After heated discussion and multiple procedural motions, the board voted to send Policy FF back to committee for additional work and public input. Several trustees said they preferred to reinstate language that had been considered earlier in staff committee work rather than adopt the version that was on the April agenda.
No naming decisions were made at the meeting; trustees directed staff and the committee to return with revised language and to engage additional community input.
