Frank Oulton (Oulton) told the board he had expected momentum on the park’s panels and landscaping but sought a contact for updates. Parks staff said Director Corey King will be the point of contact; staff reported the town has set aside tourism‑fund dollars in FY2025 and FY2026 and that cost estimates for full construction were significantly higher than earlier projections.
Town staff said earlier stabilization and masonry work (including kiln stabilization completed with donated labor from Taylor Clay) keeps the artifacts preserved, but a large funding needle‑mover is required for full construction. Staff expects it may be FY2027 before enough funds are in place under current budgets and recommended piecing the project together over time.
Why this matters: The pottery site is an identified historic resource for Matthews; the town has acted to stabilize structures and has approved content for interpretive panels but needs additional capital to complete the public improvements.
