Cobb board gives tentative approval to FY2026 budget; final vote set for May 15

The Cobb County School Board gave tentative approval April 24 to the superintendent's recommended FY2026 budget so the district can advertise the budget and solicit public comment, as required by board policy.

Brad Johnson, identified as the district's chief financial officer and presenting for the final time, said tentative approval would allow the district to post the budget and continue to seek public input. He and Superintendent Ragdale noted the budget includes a fully funded salary step that will result in pay increases depending on employees' current step — described as providing up to a 4.6% raise for some staff — while acknowledging concerns about forecasted digest growth.

Board member Mr. Scammerhorn moved to approve tentative adoption; Mr. Hutchins seconded. The motion passed unanimously on a show of hands with seven in favor and none opposed. Administration said the final budget will be presented for adoption at the May 15, 2025 board meeting.

During discussion, the superintendent reiterated revenue concerns: digest growth projections have declined in recent years, and a forecast of 2% growth the coming year "does not even cover the full salary step," he said, making conservative budgeting practices important. Board member Sailor asked whether the budget includes details on fleet maintenance and transportation; administration replied that the materials are available and that staff (including Mark Smith) would follow up.

The board moved the tentative budget to the required public-advertising phase; the district said the full budget document would be available online after the meeting and final approval would be requested May 15.
