Committee authorizes city to apply for $679,000 fire training facility grant

Deputy Chief Pelletier briefed the Government Operations Committee on a plan to replace the city’s live‑fire training facility and asked for authorization to apply for a Maine Fire Protection Services Commission grant to fund the work.
Pelletier said the current facility is more than 38 years old and that firefighters statewide require live‑fire training to maintain proficiency. He told the committee the grant request would cover roughly $679,000 and that the Maine Fire Protection Services Commission grant is a reimbursement grant with no local match required. The committee moved and seconded a motion to approve the application; members raised no objections and authorized staff to apply.
Pelletier said the department has a hiring process scheduled that will use the training facility in April and invited councilors to tour the training site once plans are established. Staff also told the committee the grant application will appear on the next full council agenda for formal approval.
