The Infrastructure Committee approved signing MDOT paperwork in advance of the US‑202/I‑395 bridge deck replacement project to allow overweight construction vehicles to access the work zone when the project begins.
Jefferson Davis, city engineer, said MDOT asked municipalities to approve overweight/overlength authorizations early so city management and councilors can review the permit language before construction starts. The project currently has no firm start date but MDOT anticipates the work may begin in 2025 and finish in 2027, Davis said.
Davis provided current vehicle weight limits as context: two‑axle 34,000 pounds; three‑axle 54,000 pounds; four‑axle 69,000 pounds; five‑axle 80,000 pounds. Staff recommended approval of the advance signing to avoid schedule delays when contractors mobilize. The committee moved, seconded and approved the authorization; the transcript records voice approval without a roll‑call tally.
