City, school district to hold community safety forum May 13 in joint work session

City staff told the commission on April 28 that a joint work session between the Lacey City Council and North Thurston Public Schools is scheduled for May 13 at River Ridge High School and will focus on community safety in schools.
The session will use a different format from previous joint meetings, staff said: an opening presentation (including updated homelessness statistics and prior joint efforts), followed by a fishbowl panel to surface perspectives on substance abuse, vaping and related safety issues. Staff said they plan to include students, the district superintendent, school board and city council members, student-resource officers and representatives from community organizations to create a facilitated community dialogue.
Staff invited members of the Commission on Equity to attend and participate if available, saying the format was intended to be more of a conversation than a series of presentations. The session is open to the public; organizers said notifications and event materials would be circulated once final planning concludes.
