Commission staff reported on April 28 that the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging summit is nearly ready, with a confirmed keynote and tabling organizations and with security planning under way.
A staff member said organizers have confirmed 17 organizations for the tabling portion of the summit and that the site setup on Friday afternoon was approved by South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC). The staff member identified Erin Jones as the keynote speaker and said organizers expect about 150 attendees once staff, vendors and commission members are counted.
Organizers told the commission they have asked the Lacey Police Department for additional patrol presence during the event windows because of a concern about possible protesters; event doors are scheduled to open at 8 a.m., registration at 9 a.m., and the conference program from 9:30 a.m. to about 3 p.m. The staff member said the city and partner sponsors — including the City of Olympia, a local Methodist church, YMCA, and SPSCC — are contributing sponsorship and in-kind support (SPSCC waived most rental fees and charged a $400 labor fee).
Commissioners discussed staffing tables, youth panel participation and workshop facilitation. Staff asked for more participation from commission members for tabling and for an afternoon workshop on municipalities and jurisdictions. No formal action was taken; organizers asked commission members to confirm availability for panels and tables by email.
