Mohave County constables requested a $3,000 increase in travel funding during the April 16 budget workshop to pay for quarterly training, nonlethal equipment training and interagency skill-building, the newly elected presiding constable and a constable told supervisors.
Constable John Deese described a plan to fund five constables for regular quarterly training, with a $500 per-constable allocation plus an extra $1,000 to support training for a firearms instructor and travel to regional training sites. He noted constables often work alone and said more training is needed to improve officer safety and standards.
County response and grants County staff said the presiding constable had told finance staff that grant funding options are available for constable training and that the finance office increased the constables’ travel budget by $1,500 based on the estimate provided. Manager Alters and staff encouraged the constables to pursue grant applications for training and nonlethal equipment purchases and said they would support using grant proceeds where feasible.
Ending note: The board asked staff and the constables to continue to pursue grants and training plans; budgetary adjustments for the full requested amount were not finalized at the workshop.
