Board approves Superior Court request to submit 'fill the gap' state aid application

The Graham County Board of Supervisors voted to allow the Superior Court to submit its fiscal-year 2025 'fill the gap' state aid application, which the court described as $12,723 this year plus an associated 5% set-aside.
Mindy from Superior Court told the board, "Every year we have state aid that's available to us. This year, it's 12,723. We also have 5% set aside monies. It all comes from fines and fees, but we have to request permission to use it." She said the funds are used for the pretrial services officer salary and ERE (employer-related expenses).
Mindy described pretrial services duties: monitoring defendants while cases are pending, conducting random alcohol testing, weekly check-ins and curfew location monitoring, and helping connect defendants with substance-abuse counseling and employment resources. A supervisor moved to approve submission of the application; the board voted by voice and the motion passed.
The board recorded a voice vote and the motion passed; the item will proceed to the appropriate state application portal.
