Cochise County supervisors approve consent items, raise concerns about Bisbee Jail conditions

Supervisor Crosby raised the jail facilities concerns during discussion, saying the issues were identified at a recent meeting with staff. “When we had our, meeting here with mister Crowley this last week, we talked about water leaks at the Bisbee Veil in the vault, water leaks in the Bisbee Jail parking lot, and power and water and HVAC at the Bisbee Jail,” Supervisor Crosby said. Crosby added that staff had indicated the kitchen, freezers, plumbing and sewer “sounded like he thought we needed completely new kitchen and freezers and completely redo plumbing and sewer.”
Crosby also cautioned the board to plan for the possibility that the proposed jail tax might not pass. “I believe that, all those problems with the current jail do exist. And, that in case the jail tax does not pass, we need to be thinking about what if the jail tax doesn't pass,” Crosby said.
Supervisor Anthony said he agreed after visiting the facility and emphasized the sewage and kitchen problems. “I also think having visited it that you it's really obvious about the sewage and the kitchen, and it it's just a mess. So it's something that's serious and needs to be taken care of right away,” Anthony said. He added that he did not believe “throwing money in an old building is gonna really be the best use of taxpayers' money.”
The meeting record shows no formal action was taken on the jail repairs or on planning related to the jail tax; the only formal action recorded in the transcript was approval of the consent agenda.
