Corporal Scott Borgstadt of the Sierra Vista Police Department said the department will host a free vehicle-VIN-etching event at the Sierra Vista Mall to deter theft and make vehicles less valuable to chop shops.
Borgstadt described the service and logistics on KWCD, saying etching typically takes 10–15 minutes and the department will work with Citizens Police Academy Associates to clean windows and process paperwork. “If your VIN is etched into them, it basically becomes useless to the chop shops,” Borgstadt said. The event will be held on the east side of the Sierra Vista Mall from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; donations are accepted but not required.
Why it matters: VIN etching is a free, preventative measure aimed at reducing vehicle theft and discouraging resale of stolen vehicle parts. The department framed the event as an easy, community-provided service that takes less time than responding to a stolen-vehicle call.
Borgstadt asked drivers to visit the east side of the mall during the event window and thanked the Citizens Police Academy Associates for their assistance.
