Planning committee notes incoming climate-element comments; flags battery storage as upcoming issue

At its April 28 meeting the Anacortes planning committee reported an uptick in public comment on the comprehensive plan’s climate element and flagged battery energy storage as an item the city will need to address.
Councilmember Moulton, reporting for the committee, said staff told the committee that public comments about the climate element are “starting to roll in more,” and that those comments are being posted on the city planning page for review.
Committee members also discussed the prospects for battery storage facilities in the city, including conceptual uses such as supporting the Guemes Island ferry or Washington State Ferries. The committee did not adopt any policy or motion; members said the topic will require future analysis about suitable locations, sizes and regulatory considerations.
The planning committee included Councilmembers Cleland McGrath, Walters and Moulton, and the report noted the city will share public comments on the planning web pages as they are received.
