Board moves spring secondary conferences to March, shortens summer-school registration window

The Stevens Point Area Public School District board approved a revision to the 2024–25 academic calendar that moves secondary spring conferences back about a month to late March and shortens the summer-school registration window.

Administrators told the board secondary staff at PJ Jacobs, Ben Franklin and SPASH recommended moving spring conferences because conferences previously fell too close to the end of semester one (mid-January) and limited the ability to provide substantive student information. The revised dates schedule spring conferences for March 24 and March 27 (dates vary by building) rather than the earlier February dates. The board also approved a condensed summer-school registration window that will close on April 6 instead of May 16; administrators said most classes filled within a week of opening last year and the earlier close aims to reduce late enrollment frustration.

Board members discussed concerns about timing relative to quarter and semester grading, parent access to teachers and ensuring families can meet earlier if needed. Administrators noted parents may still request conferences at any time and the district plans additional outreach and scheduled time slots to prioritize families with students receiving Ds and Fs. The board approved the revision by motion and voice vote.
