The public-address announcer at Lincoln High School told fans to treat game officials and opponents with respect and to display good sportsmanship during the contest.
“Athletic officials are seldom given the appreciation they deserve. They are given the responsibility and authority to enforce the rules of the game. Please treat the officials with the same good sportsmanship you treat the students,” the announcer said during pregame remarks. The announcer also told fans, “stay calm, stay classy, and stay respectful.”
Those comments were delivered as part of the pregame safety-and-conduct announcements that the school runs before the game; the remarks also included repeated calls to maintain an educational atmosphere and to respect opponents, officials and fellow spectators. No formal penalties or enforcement actions were described in the announcements.
The announcements were followed by music and the start of game activities.
