Norfolk County commissioners approve letter urging federal support for RSVP volunteer program

Norfolk County Commissioners voted April 23 to send a letter to the county’s federal delegation urging continued support for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), a local affiliate of AmeriCorps Senior Corps.
County Director Bill Buckley told commissioners the program delivers rides for veterans, assists in schools and supports food pantries and senior meal deliveries across Norfolk County. Buckley said the program is facing disruption because some AmeriCorps staff have been furloughed and that regional partners asked the county to advocate for continued federal funding.
Buckley said, as presented to the commissioners, that in fiscal 2024 roughly 200 active RSVP volunteers logged about 17,000 hours and that volunteers assisted students in the 2023–24 school year and provided hundreds of rides to veterans. He described the program as “lean and efficient” and said county staff were also exploring publicity and contingency options should federal support change.
Commissioners discussed the timing and targets of the letter; Buckley said the letter would be sent to the four U.S. representatives and two U.S. senators who cover portions of Norfolk County. A motion to send the letter “to the federal delegation in support of RSVP program funding as presented” was made and seconded; the commissioners voted unanimously in favor.
The letter asks the delegation to advocate for the program while county staff continue to plan contingency options if federal funding is reduced. Commissioners and staff said they will monitor developments with AmeriCorps and seek local alternatives if necessary.

The commissioners also discussed outreach and noted county volunteers recently delivered handmade blankets to a VA facility; staff said outreach to state and local partners could continue but the immediate advocacy would focus on the federal delegation.
