APD reports overall crime down 11% year to date; Deputy Chief cites staffing and Operation Kidstart

Deputy Chief Hampton of the Atlanta Police Department’s Special Events Division briefed the Public Safety Legal Administration Committee on April 28, reporting an 11% decrease in overall crime year to date.
Hampton said homicide is down 22% and incidents of persons shot are down 21%. He reported that all zones are down year to date with Zone 4 leading the reductions. Hampton attributed the decreases to increased staffing, equipment (including a Take Home Car Program), 12-hour shifts in some zones and a targeted initiative called Operation Kidstart, a biweekly deployment combining local, state and federal resources.
Hampton provided specific results for Operation Kidstart’s three deployments this year: 51 arrests, 19 convicted felons identified, 9 documented gang members, seven firearms reported, 34 traffic citations issued and numerous narcotics seizures. He added APD is preparing community-focused summer programming, including police athletic programming and Promise Center activities for juveniles.
