Mayor to propose ban on short-term rentals in single-family neighborhoods; downtown exceptions planned

The mayor told the City Council the administration plans to present an ordinance in May that would ban short-term rentals (STRs) in single-family residential neighborhoods citywide and permit STRs only in downtown and corridor areas.
At the meeting the mayor said the proposed ordinance will be reviewed by the planning commission and then return to council for final action. The measure is intended to curb parties, parking and other neighborhood nuisances that residents have reported in locations where whole-home short-term rentals operate amid single-family housing.
“...we’re bringing forward an ordinance recommendation to council in the month of May, which will ban short term rentals in all single family residential homes across the city of Dearborn,” the mayor said. The same presentation said the city would continue to use code enforcement and police citations for nuisance behavior while the ordinance is developed. The mayor added that the proposal could include registration requirements to give the city a back‑end record of hosts rather than relying on third-party platforms.
Council members and staff said the measure is intended to protect neighborhoods; staff will bring an ordinance text to the appropriate planning and zoning commission meeting next month and then to council. No vote was taken at the meeting; the item was announced as forthcoming legislative action.
