Sustainability Advisory Board discussion flagged scope concerns on cameras and compost site assessments

Longmont council liaisons said the Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB) has opened a council-referred discussion about gas station-related code issues and that city staff and SAB leaders have monitored some advisory members for overstepping the board's advisory role.

Liaisons said no formal decisions have been taken on the gas station matter. They reported two prior instances when SAB comments drew staff and chair reminders about the board's remit: one involved concerns about constitutional privacy and camera use tied to a transportation mobility plan, and a separate exchange concerned environmental due diligence related to a potential compost facility site. Liaisons said that SAB received an environmental site assessment addressing contamination risks and that legal guidance was circulated to board members by email.

Liaisons identified the SAB board member who raised the environmental-assessment question as Ethan Aubrey and said staff had responded to clarify how the board should discuss these technical matters. The liaison update noted an unrelated set of 11 recommendations submitted by community environmental advocates that had not yet been considered by SAB at the time of the update.

Council liaisons said they were monitoring the advisory board's scope and asked council to consider whether additional direction to SAB or staff was needed; no formal direction or vote was recorded in the liaison update.
