Waukee introduces utility-rate changes for water, sewer, stormwater, solid waste and gas

City staff presented a package of proposed utility-rate adjustments and the council approved the ordinances on first reading (title only) for water, sewer, stormwater, solid waste and natural gas rates, with unanimous roll-call votes to advance the measures to subsequent readings.
Staff said the combined changes would raise the typical residential monthly utility bill by about $4.89. Specific adjustments presented included a water rate increase near 2.5% (about $1.16 on an average monthly bill), a wastewater increase of about 1% (roughly $0.58), a stormwater increase of 8.78% (about $0.65), and a solid-waste increase of 14.29 (about $2.50). Staff also noted irrigation rates were already at $4 and would not be increased as part of this ordinance. The overall illustrative impact for a $400,000 house was presented as approximately a 1.16% increase from the previous year.
Rudy and other utility staff walked the council through the tables on the screen and recommended introduction of each ordinance and approval of the first reading and title only. Council members Kron, Battenberg, Grove, Pierce, Sinclair and Crown voted yes on each introduction.
The council will consider second and final readings, and any public comment, in future meetings as required before rate ordinances take effect.
