District staff presented CalSCHLS (Healthy Kids) survey results and school‑by‑school report cards, showing mixed results across grades and stakeholder groups and strong increases in parent participation.
Superintendent Alejandra Yount and assessment staff told the board parent responses rose to 582 from about 252 the prior year after a participation incentive; staff participation remained lower (about 45%). The student measures report “yes all of the time” or “yes most of the time,” so district targets differ by respondent group.
Principals from Fairsite, Greer, Lake Canyon, Marengo Ranch, River Oaks, Valley Oaks and McCaffrey summarized one strength and one area for improvement at each site. Common strengths included “high expectations from adults” and improvements in perceived school culture and student motivation. Recurring improvement areas were student connectedness, anti‑bullying climate (especially at some elementary grade levels) and facilities upkeep.
Board members asked that staff request additional breakdowns from the survey vendor — for example, combining “agree” and “strongly agree” for parents and staff so results are more comparable with student percentages. Trustees also suggested follow‑up focus groups or workshops to probe why specific items (such as safety and connectedness) scored lower.
Public comment on the survey period and related topics followed during the meeting; principals said site leadership teams will review the survey with school site councils and bring targeted improvement plans back to the board and communities.
Questions and next steps
- Trustee Matthew Ward and others asked whether the vendor could report “agree” in addition to “strongly agree” for parents and staff to make cross‑group comparisons clearer; staff agreed to request that breakdown.
- Staff said principals will present school-specific plans after site councils and leadership teams review the data.
The administration emphasized the survey is one of several measures and that additional local conversations and targeted interventions at sites will follow.
